Projects

The project for Luke Morley’s solo album “Songs from the Blue Room”.

Luke and I began brainstorming the idea for the album cover. Luke wrote the album during lockdown and recorded most of it in his studio at home, which is painted blue. So, the idea was for a room set or location that could have a bizarre sense of isolation. It didn’t take me long to remember a location in Calpe that I have always wanted to shoot. It is called La Murulla Roja and was designed by Ricardo Bofill. It is described as a postmodern apartment complex. Apartments are connected by bridges, staircases and courtyards. All painted in different tones of red, pink, blue and violet. I remembered the blue part was the central atrium/courtyard and had lots of interconnecting stairs and walkways. I showed Luke a couple of images and we were off to Spain.

Writing an album is sometimes the easy bit. Naming it can sometimes be tricky although I have to admit, with SFTBR I didn’t exactly tax myself when it came to looking for inspiration. The last key element is finding a memorable and suitable visual interpretation of the music you’ve spent months crafting and it can be difficult so when Jason suggested La Muralla Roja might be the perfect location, I knew straight away he was right. The building itself is unique and quirky and the way the light reflects off the various colours is quite beautiful. Having found the location you still need to be able to capture what’s in front of you and Jason managed to use all the elements to create a memorable image that complemented the album perfectly. I wish it was always that easy!
